Society History

The Society was formed in 1977 when a group of like-minded people came together to share their love of Natural History and the countryside. Even after centuries of abuse the countryside around Merthyr Tydfil has a rich and varied wildlife. It has a wealth of natural habitats and contains some rare and endangered species e.g. the Sorbus Leyana trees in Penmoelallt woodland. It has many geological features and fascinating reminders of man’s pre-industrial presence.

The Society aims to encourage people to learn how to enjoy the countryside on their doorstep and also how to look after it.

The Society wants to make sure that your children and your children’s children will still be able to enjoy “the wild side of Merthyr Tydfil”.

We own two nature reserves and carry out practical management tasks. Also we jointly manage Penmoelallt Community Woodland with the Forestry Commission Wales who are the owners. The Society runs a regular programme of outings and field trips. During the winter months we meet approximately once a month at Rhydycar Bowls Club with an interesting programme of talks and films. We campaign to conserve our natural heritage and protect it from being threatened by environmentally damaging developments.
