Penmoelallt... a woodland lost in time.

Penmoelallt is the chosen site of Stone Age people, Iron Masters, Sheep Farmers, Woodsmen, Naturalists, and the site of some of the rarest trees on earth!

Worthy of sensitive management, Penmoelallt has been sympathetically rejuvenated by the Merthyr Tydfil and District Naturalists’ Society (‘The Nats’) in partnership with Forestry Commission Wales.

Penmoelallt Community Woodland is a 33 hectare, SSSI site of mixed broadleaf and coniferous woodland immediately north of Merthyr Tydfil with extensive views over the Taff Valley. The woodland offers a place to use your imagination and broaden your knowledge: to learn more about its complex biodiversity, to marvel at the magnificent oak and the minute ant; to exercise at your own pace in an ever-changing landscape; to stand still and absorb the varied sights and sounds of the environment; to enjoy a range of activities facilitated by members of ‘The Nats’ in the Outdoor Classroom; to be surprised by the harmony of art and nature and to marvel at the limestone crags of the distant valley side across lush green farmland.
